Jade L'Opera JADE Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello Review

Jade L'Opera JADE Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My suggestions to parents who have kids who play violin:
1. as they get older, get them a good quality instrument. Rent one, don't buy one - the rentals are so much better quality than what you'd probably budget for. I am currently renting a better-quality instrument than I played as a teen - as a child I guess it doesn't matter, but as I got older, a better instrument would have been nice.
2. get them a good quality rosin. As an adult I have come to appreciate spending alittle more money for things that are worth it - and this rosin is one of them...to a certain point. I got tis exact rosin for $10.86 and although that is about 10x more than I'd have ever expected to pay for rosin, I think the results are well-worth it. (although after I posted my raving review the price hovered at $16-$17 for it, which i think is HORRIBLE. I'm morally opposed to buying more of this rosin until the prices goes back down!!!!
3. get them a couple private lessons from a teacher who cares. and believes in them.
This is why I like this rosin:
1. The higher quality makes the bow stick better to the strings
2. overall it helped produce a nicer tone ( I changed just the rosin, not the violin. I used the regular free rosin that the rental company gave me for a little while, then decided to try this rosin. so only the rosin has changed, not the quality of the violin)
However:
1. It does give off a lot of dust - i don't know if this amount is typical of higher-quality rosins, but I find myself cleaning more off my strings and violin at the end of my sessions now.
2. I do find that it wears off surprisingly quickly. Let's say I practice a little over an hour, I might re-apply once or twice. I can't remember that clearly but I think when I was younger and playing in the orchestra, I don't know that I even re-applied the rosin during a performance, which would be about that same amount of time. But 1)maybe my memory fails me and 2) maybe the lesser the quailty rosin the more it sticks to the bow and not the strings or 3) maybe I was just not that into playing that I didn't care enough to re-apply.
Overall: This rosin impressed me. I really think it changed the sound that was coming out of the instrument. It inspired me to start recording myself and send to my parents, who were thrilled that all those years of pestering me to 'practice my violin' have finally come to fruition.

Cremona SV-175 Premier Student Violin, Full-Size Review

Cremona SV-175 Premier Student Violin, Full-Size
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My teacher said this was a great deal. It came with a LaSalle Bow and Travelite Case which alone cost $100. The violin comes with good fine tuners, and ebony pegs as advertised. The fine tuners do need a little grease since they had a little paint on them, but otherwise work fine. The violin sounds great.
However, the strings are merely 'ok' (as is the case with almost all student violins). The A and E strings are not really strings but wires. It is expected though after buying some decent strings (roughly $30) that the violin will sound even better. Even though the strings should be replaced in the future, it is not an immediate need and the violin sounds ok with the ones it comes with. Personally, I will be buying new strings and a shoulder rest($30) next month out of my next paycheck.
Summary:
Great violin, great to play as is.
Buy some strings when you decide you will for sure be playing the violin a lot and can afford them (~$30).

Cremona SV-225 Premier Student Violin, Full-Size Review

Cremona SV-225 Premier Student Violin, Full-Size
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, I ordered the Cremona SV-225 violin on Sept. 16th, and I received it on the 18th and am looking at the tuned instrument as I write this. I bought this brand and model based on numerous written and video reviews over the last month or so. I wanted a decent quality, student violin for 200-300 dollars, that would serve me without frustration until and if I get good enough to upgrade. The Cremona cost me $206.00 shipped. I am not a violinist (YET), my instrument of choice to this point being the piano. But, that said, I do know quality when I see it, and when I hear it.
The violin came UPS, adequately packed in a large and undamaged box. (No offense, UPS, but this has to be a first...) Under the paper packing was a light but substantial hard shell case. Inside was the violin and bow, a compartment containing rosin and a shoulder strap for the case, and the violin bridge, wrapped in foam and stuck under the tailpiece. The case had a built-in hygrometer for humidity that actually seemed to read accurately. So far, so good.
I soon discovered that this is really a very nice violin, on many levels. In appearance, it is stained a pleasing reddish brown, with a satin varnish that does not easily show fingerprints. The spruce top is very tight grained, and appears to be one piece. The back is two piece maple with a very attractive and visible flame pattern. The neck/peg box/scroll also have a nice pattern and compliment the instrument. The pegs, chin rest, end button and the bow frog are all apparently ebony of decent quality, and the tailpiece with its 4 fine tuners seems to be some sort of composite plastic. The f-holes are cleanly cut.
Time to install the bridge. There are no instructions, but there are a million websites showing this. The strings need to be loosened some, and the bridge carefully stood up under the strings. The flat back of the bridge labeled 'Cremona' faces the tailpiece, and the edges of the bridge are lined up with the inside notches cut into the f-holes. The back should wind up perfectly vertical with the strings placed in the four small notches along the top. The lowest height part of the bridge is under the E-string. Also, there is a tiny piece of tubing about a 1/4" long slipped over the E-string, and this needs to rest over the top of the bridge notch to protect the bridge from the thin E-string.
Tuning is done gradually, in stages back and forth between all strings. It is important to check the vertical alignment of the bridge frequently, as tuning will pull it forward and so the top must be carefully slid back to vertical until the tuning is complete. I used my piano to tune the violin, based on a Google Images diagram. GDAE, with the D being 1 white key above middle C. If unsure, read.
I opened the rosin and scratched the surface several times using the edge of the bow adjusting screw. I then tensioned the bow, and dragged it across the rosin for quite some time. NEVER touch the bow hair with your bare fingers while doing this or any other time; the oil from your skin will ruin the 'bite' of the hair and you won't get a sound.
The strings will stretch for a day, and so need adjusted several times, especially the first hour or so. Once I had the instrument decently tuned I played a number of open notes on 1 or 2 strings, and the sound was really surprising--at least to me. I've never touched a violin before, and thought for sure I'd be screeching and bouncing and waking the dead. What came out was a clear, bright, loud, and most pleasant sound. I was amazed! This little wooden box actually sounded great! And, I hadn't broken a string, the bow, the bridge, or my wallet in the process.
Along with the violin, I ordered extra Helicore strings, some 'peg drops' (based on a number of people's recommendations), a different bridge, a fingering chart, and higher quality rosin. What can I say; I like to be prepared.
So, that's where I'm at. I may never be a virtuoso, but I think this thing and I will wind up being good friends. Next--lessons!!

When I first opened the case, I was a little worried that I may have bought a piece of junk. My initial thoughts were - this is a little too light, it won't hold a tune and it just feels cheap. Once my daughter's violin instructor looked it over and tuned it for me, she gave her thumbs up and said it's a great beginner violin, especially for the little amount that it costs. With the right amount of pressure on the pegs, it holds its tune just fine.

I got my 4 year old this violin for Christmas thinking it would be a cute gift. I didn't really have high expectations other than I knew that I didn't want a plastic "toy". The violin is amazing! It is well crafted- all wooden frame and body with real bow. The case makes it easy for her to carry and care for. My daughter loves it and she is actually able to "play" it. She sounds like a little musician. It was well worth the cost- you can't even get a toy violin for the same price. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a child interested in playing the violin.

Great violin. Quality is really good. All I had to do was put the bridge in place (it came with detailed instructions). The strings are already on it, you just have to gently push the pegs in as you are tighting the stings so you can tune it. So far it has stayed tuned with no problem. The violins in the $50 range all had reviews explaining how things had to be replaced and upgraded as soon as they got it. I didn't have to do any of that. Plus it comes with an extra set of stings and an extra bow.

I live in an appartment so don't like to poke too many hole on the wall to hang stuff. I love this Sting Swing Music stand holder. It is very sturdy and safe to tighten onto the music stand (I recommend finger tight and leave the plastic over on the screw). I left my violin out all the time so I can quickly get to it for practice anytime. quickly hang the violin and bow for taking a break. You can take it with you to orchestra practiceand hang your violin during break, but it would be hard to turn pages.

I ordered this violin stand via Amazon from Johnson String Instruments. The company does an excellent job with shipping the items quickly.
This violin stand is top notch. I don't think you could improve on the design. It adjusts for the height of your instrument and the bow hook also adjusts to various heights. It folds quickly and compactly so you can tuck it out of the way if necessary or of course is terrific for carrying with you.
Excellent violin stand. Highly recommend both the stand and the Johnson String Instrument company.

Full Size 4/4 Electric Violin Set with Case and Accessories - Blue Review

Full Size 4/4 Electric Violin Set with Case and Accessories - Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to find the best quality, all around greatest value violin I could get for dirt cheap. I didn't want to lose an arm and a leg for something I wasn't sure I was going to be able to pick up! But I like a challenge to fix something and make it better, so it was a somewhat fun thing to do to get this going.
I read a lot of reviews and pros and cons and I settled on this. I liked it because it had nearly everything in it all packaged together: decent sound, quiet or amplified playing, rosin, bow, strings, a bag, the works.
It's cheap. looks like the colors were spray painted on like the a cheap plastic toy. Unplayable out of the box. Nearly the whole thing is plastic, but good enough once fixed up.
What other reviewers said were true:
1) Get a new bridge. There are no grooves on the one it came with and it's rather thick. The Glaesel bridge recommended from others was fine, but according to my violin teacher, rather pricey. Might be able to get one for less than $10 (she told me she payed $7). Make sure that the bridge has the black line on the E string. (I had mine reversed for the first few weeks and it kind of messed me up and the sound).
2) Get peg drops. The plastic pegs need them to stay in place. Slipping and sliding pegs are not fun.
3) Get 4 fine tuners. It comes with one, but it's IMPOSSIBLE to tune this without them. I got 4 because I wanted them to match, but you can just go for 3. They are less than $10 shipped for the lot from ebay or something.
4) The battery clip inside snapped on me just as some people saw. I resoldered the broken piece and now it's fine, but you can pick up the replacement clip at Radio Shack.
5) The bow's hairs are a tag too long or something and to get them tight enough bends the bow in an improper way. I might upgrade if I stick with it.
6) Amazon might not offer the best price as I looked on Ebay on well and found they have the same picture and package for a good deal less. Something to keep in mind.
7) Pick up an extra set of strings off Ebay. For a newbie, I got brand new strings for less than $2. They aren't good quality, but they are good enough.
I'm pretty satisfied with this. Once amplified, it's honestly pretty nice.

And it's not just the looks, this electric violin sounds surprisingly good when using headphones or amplifier. The bow is nice. It definitely needs a shoulder rest, some better rosin and a better set of strings, but for the price, this is wonderful. Intelli IMT-600 Guitar, Violin and Chromatic Clip-on Tuner Review

Intelli IMT-600 Guitar, Violin and Chromatic Clip-on Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was invited to participate in a jam session at a friend's large family get-together. When it came time to tune up one of the other players handed me an Intelli IMT-600 clip-on tuner. I had never used this type of tuner before and had never seen one before. Having an older type of tuner which required me to find a spot in front of the guitar (and music played by others would interfere in the tuning) I was amazed by how well the IMT-600 worked, especially when all the other musicians were playing their instruments at the same time. Immediately upon returning home that evening I found the product at Amazon and ordered one. When it arrived I was very impressed with its accuracy not only in tuning my Martin HD-28, and my Ibanez classical guitar, but how well and easy it was to use for my mandolin, and even my Les Paul electric. The price is phenomenal for what you get and the convenience of having a tuner which clips to the headstock is fabulous. The ONLY negative to which I have found for this product is that it is a bit slow tuning the low E-string. Other than that I can't recommend this enough. It is a wonderful product.

Kun Collapsible Violin Shoulder Rest, 4/4 Black
Average Reviews:

Do not assume that most expensive shoulder rests are the best ones. I tried Bon Musica $40 and Kun Voce $70 and none of them was even remotely as pleasurable to play violin with as with this reviewing Kun brand. Different people have unlikely shoulder with a different proportion to its neck. Some humans have long necks, another almost perpendicular shoulders, still others have gently rolling down with significant trapezoid muscle shoulders. So, my advice is this: go to violin shop and try all of their shoulder rests find one you like and if they expensive get one here on Amazon.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a product called the "Bow Right for Violin." As both a private and public string teacher, I have always been frustrated trying to get my students to play with a straight bow stroke that is parallel to the bridge. I have been pleasantly surprised by this product. It basically attaches to the sides of the violin (or smaller sized viola) and creates a lane that students have to bow within. For some of my students, we do a few warm-ups with it on and for other students, I have them use it for the entire lesson. Many of my students have commented that it really helps them feel what their arm should be doing on long bow strokes. I love this product and plan to use it in the fall for students in my orchestra class who are struggling.
