Cecilio CVN-Black 4/4 (Full Size) Ebony Fitted Orchestra Black Violin with Hard Case Review

Cecilio CVN-Black 4/4 (Full Size) Ebony Fitted Orchestra Black Violin with Hard Case
Average Reviews:

I personally was looking for a cheap violin that I could fiddle (no pun intended) around with - basically learning how to hold the thing, basic notes, how to tune/restring it, etc. I got my wish with this violin. It's obviously not too well-made, and the material feels cheap, but it should come as no surprise for the price.
It likes to go out of tune too easily, and the strings seem to break without much pressure applied, so be wary if you're buying this for someone who doesn't know the first thing about a violin and its care. Honestly, I see similar violins (if not the exact same one) elsewhere for half the price here, so take that into consideration as well.

ViolinSmart Solid Wood Electric Silent Violin - Black Review

ViolinSmart Solid Wood Electric Silent Violin - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price, I wasn't expecting much. But this violin is of worse quality than others I've bought for half the price.
The materials are obviously extremely cheap; glitter paint and plastic. There are even blotches of bare surface where the paint wasn't fully applied! The peg holes are too small, and the pegs either stick tight or slip horribly. By the time you finish tuning your fourth string, the first you tuned will already be flat!
The bow is also of low quality. The wood I can not identify, but it's roughly carved, too flimsy, and the hairs are too loose. The accessories are also bare-bones, including dried out and cracked rosin, and the cheapest disposable ear buds imaginable.
I bought this to be a "silent" practice violin. I realized it wouldn't be completely silent, but I'm disappointed to find it's nearly as loud unplugged as my acoustic violins are with a heavy mute. I won't be using this to practice late at night as I had hoped.
There are a few positives. For the price, the sound quality of the electronics are fair. The bridge is an appropriate size for the instrument (although I did have to put in my own notches). It's nice to have a normal violin shape to attach a shoulder rest, my own chin rest, etc. The case is cheap but protects very well.
Overall, this violin isn't worth half of what I paid for it. I'm going to work a bit with the pegs, use some peg oil, and try to get the feel of this new instrument (using my own bow, though). But I have a feeling that I'm going to get fed up with it pretty fast and will be returning it shortly. Very disappointed.

Review of the JOSEF BREMEN VIOLIN OUTFIT 4/4
This product is a good buy for beginning violinists or those that don't want to spend alot of money, but recieve a satisfactory product. It was nicely kempt on arrival without damages. The rosin, the bow, and the instrument were all in good condition and ready to play. My main concern at first, was that the tuning pegs had trouble keeping thier tuning for the first few times I played it, after I'd "broken in" the instrument however and the strings had time to stretch and adjust, the strings kept thier tuned settings. Obviously it is not as exquisite as a professional quality instrument, but it is good quality. It sounds very clear and crisp with the rosin applied, and is an overall great deal for the presented price of $129.95.

eMedia My Violin Starter Pack for Kids (1/4 size)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We are very unhappy with the condition of the product we received and with the tone of the response to my complaint directly to the company which sent the item, Emedia Music. The violin arrived with the strings all off. There was no indication that assembly is required in Amazon's product information on the website. When I first spoke to a representative of the company, I was told that the dvd which comes with the violin explains everything about how to attach the strings. This would have been true for someone who was already quite knowledgable about these instruments, but certainly not for a "layman". And I should not be required to sit with a set of needle-nose pliers which EMedia's representative said I would need, and try to understand on the phone how to somehow get the strings back on. This is what the man from the company told me I would need to try next. At the very least, we feel an apology was in order from him, with the preferable response being instructions on shipping the entire thing back (at their expense, or Amazon's) for replacement/repairs.

We visited a local violin store, and they told us that the reason the strings were all off was because the bridge is the wrong size and was unable to support the strings. They also told us it would cost [...] for them to supply the correct bridge, and another [...] or so just to restring the instrument once we got the new bridge.

Meanwhile, our little daughter has yet to even get to try out her new violin that she was so excited about. She is becoming less excited...

I bought this for my son who is just starting to learn violin. He had a similar one when we rented the violin but had recently purchase a new violin. The Original Hill Dark Rosin For Violin - Viola - Cello Review

The Original Hill Dark Rosin For Violin - Viola - Cello
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This rosin has been recommended to me by my violin teacher and I am very happy with the results of using it. The consistency of the rosin is softer then other brands I tried, and thus makes the application onto the bow hair much easier. The rosin stays on the hair for quite a long time, and treated bow produces very clean sound, without any harshness or hisses. Residue fall out onto the violin varnish seems less messy then from some stock rosins I tried. Wrapping the rosin in cloth/sponge is a nice touch - no plastic box to rattle inside your violin case, and your hands stay clean while handling it.

Hill Brand Dark Rosin, considered by many as the ultimate rosin, is used by professionals worldwide. Hill rosins are wrapped in their own padded velveteen shell. This is the rosin that others strive to emulate. Well suited for violin, viola and cello. This dark (green) rosin is slightly softer than the light (amber) and grips abit more. This is genuine Hill Dark Rosin, not an imitation!

I bought this violin about 6 months ago from internet vendor. This is the worst violin I have ever tried. Nothing is true about this violin's description. First, wood smelled like they were just cut fresh, not aged at all. Varnish on wood is terrible for any stringed instrument. It has the worst furniture varnish consist of thick uneven coat of poorly applied polyurethane. Finger board is painted black and it is not even straight. Chin rest and peg are made out of plastic, not ebony. There were no ebony parts. They are either painted black or plastic. The bridge is not even maple. It is cut poorly and won't fit correctly. Pegs will slip and snap. Fine tuners will wobble too much. Then strings will break. If you want cheap violin, buy Suzuki or Klaus Mueller. At least they work like violin and sound like violin

I received my violin in a timely manner. This is definitely a starter violin for the first few years, but not to make a career out of playing this one. It came well packaged. They violin case is in better condition than I thought I would come in. The rosin doesn't seem to work all that well so I just bought some from a music store. It was a little hard getting the bridge on and I'm even familiar with putting bridges on instruments! I ended up having to shave it to fit the curve that I wanted because I kept playing on two strings at once. It wasn't too bad shaving some off. You just have to be careful. I would definitely recommend this to someone who just wants to fiddle with the violin or is first learning how to play.

ViolinSmart Brazilwood Violin Bow Size 4/4 High Quality Great Sound Review

ViolinSmart Brazilwood Violin Bow Size 4/4 High Quality Great Sound
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an adult learner--a newbie. And still working on how to hold a fiddle and bow. Some months ago, I bought a fiddle that lists for $1,500 and a bow, that appraised for $300. After some near-misses with doorways, I decided that I should use a cheaper bow until I better learned how to manage it. I purchased this one because it's CHEAP! Is 8-sided like my "real" bow -- and the reviews were positive.
It arrived very promptly -- in a very battered box, that had taken some serious dents. "Uh-oh! Hope they packed it well." Opening it, I found that the bow was in a plastic sheath, taped to a sturdy wooden rod, and enveloped in several turns of bubble wrap. It had come through, just fine!
Unwrapping it, I was alarmed because it seemed to have a much more pronounced arch than my Bow #1. (Was it warped?) But no, everything lined up fine, actually. Looking it over, too, it was almost a replica of my fancier bow . . . the mother-of-pearl in the frog is a straight white, versus the pretty blue/greens in the other. Also, I could see that the wood was of a lighter weight.
Then I put on the rosin and played. the tone was also "thinner" and lighter/quieter than with the more expensive bow. (Which, as a beginning violinist with neighbors on the other side of the wall, I consider a plus.) The sound is . . . pretty. Gee.
Are these things hot? Should I "stock up while supplies last?" Incredible value. I don't know when I've been so happy with a purchase. A big thanks!

Cremona SV-100 Premier Novice Violin, 1/32-Size Review

Cremona SV-100 Premier Novice Violin, 1/32-Size
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The little violin arrived promptly and in good order. The bridge was down, but it was intentionally packed that way. The sound post was still in place (usually it will be), so it was easy to set the bridge properly and tune the strings. (If the sound post is fallen, this is not a serious problem, but don't try to set it yourself, bring it to a violin repair professional.) The pegs worked well. One cannot expect a great tone from such a tiny instrument, but it is a real, playable violin. I have replaced the tinny Chinese strings with Pirastro's and that improves the sound and volume. No fine tuners were provided with the fiddle so I bought a set of Suzuki tuners from another source (they are very inexpensive) and put them on when I changed the strings. The violin came with a good case, and the bracket inside holds the bow securely.
I had only one problem, and that was with the bow. I rosined it for weeks and it simply would not hold rosin. This meant that it could not grip the strings properly but would slide around and produce only a faint tone. I thought maybe the bowhair was some sort of inferior synthetic; however, when I brought it to my local violin repairman, he assured me it was genuine horsehair, but quite dirty. On that basis, I think I understand what happened, and I will explain it because this problem is likely to be encountered by other parents.
Whether a bow is big or small, new bowhair never holds to the string. It needs rosin, and at the start, lots of it. A repair shop always has powdered rosin on hand, and when run through it, new hair quickly becomes fit for use. But at home you will likely have only a cake of rosin. In fact, the little violin comes with a cake of rosin. When you first open it, take a nail or a pin or an unbent paper clip and scratch the surface of the rosin with about 10 lines, then rosin the bow a lot until it will grip the strings securely. My mistake was that although I did rosin the bow quite a bit at first, it was not enough, and then another factor took over: to understand this, I need to cite another rule, which is that one should never touch the bow hair, because the oil from the skin makes it slip. Well, try explaining this to a very young child. My daughter would frequently pick up the bow by the hair. Perhaps if there had more rosin on it in the first place, the effect of this might not have been quite so severe. But the combination of not enough rosin and the child continually handling the hair had such a bad effect that it would not hold more rosin. Clearly this is not the fault of the Cremona Company.
I don't know if there is a perfect solution, but I suppose the best you can do is (a) make sure the bow is thoroughly rosined before the child ever tries it; and (b) always place the bow in the child's hand at the frog (bow grip), rather than letting her pick it up herself -- to the extent possible, and watch her like a hawk.
Another problem you are likely to encounter with a tiny violin is that the G string (the lowest string) is likely to "wow" (rapid fluctuation in pitch) as much as one full tone whenever you draw the bow across it. This is a physical/acoustical problem, even with strings specifically made for this size violin, and quite disconcerting. My replacements for the original Chinese strings were Pirastro "Piranito" for the upper three, and "Chromcor" for the G. The upper strings now sounded louder and better, but the G still had the bad fluctuation. I have since discovered that Pirastro now makes the "new formula" Tonica strings in 1/16-1/32 size, and I have reason to think they have tried to address this problem. I will report back when I've had a chance to try them.

The violin I received was in good shape, except for one minor scratch in the varnish on the back. But the wood itself wasn't damaged. The sound of the violin is very nice. I purchased this violin for my daughter's first violin experience and I didn't want to spent a lot of money because I did not know yet whether or not she would take to the instrument...
It was a very solid choice! It's made well and seems to hold up to the careful treatment of an 8 year old :) I think the sound quality is slightly better than what you would expect for the price (I have been told that all 1/4 size violins have some issues with sound quality simply because of the small size). The bow is very do-able for a beginner instrument and has been very durable - it's putting up with my daughter's somewhat rough rosining technique quite well! The tuning pegs hold a tune well (after a couple of weeks) and the fine tuners work well too. Also, it's a very pretty instrument - a fact that's helping my daughter want to practice.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the case was for the price of this instrument. She can throw the violin in the back of the car with the schoolbooks and the groceries and we don't have to worry about it getting crushed.
Bottom line: our violin teacher was concerned when I said I bought a violin online through a seller that also sells everything else. In the end, she has been pleased with our purchase and so have we.

ViolinSmart 1/4 Size Student Violin w/Bow, Case, and Rosin - Solid Natural Wood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first tried to tune the violin I applied pressure to the D peg and the scroll broke from the fingerboard! It wasn't a lot of pressure so I assume there was a crack or a weak spot in the wood. Needless to say I contacted (emailed) customer support and was pleasantly surprised when they agreed to replace the violin at no charge (not even shipping)! The new violin arrived and I was able to tune it fine. My five year old son has been performing around the house almost everyday!
Now a word about the quality. Would I buy this brand to perform professionally? No. This is an inexpensive introduction to the violin - it is a massed produced product that I think is wonderful at this price. Beautiful to look at and my son loves it - nuff said.
